Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust implements Calderdale Framework

Matthew Craven, Associate Director for AHPs at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust talks about Calderdale Framework...

The project is 12 months into its implementation and thus long-term adoption and effect remains to be seen. However, it has already provided a marked transformative impact to the service provided and the patients served including achieving the following aims:

  • Improve ability of inpatient therapy service to meet caseload demand
  • Improve patient flow and acute length of stay
  • Successfully achieve complete competency sign off in over 80% of staff
  • Improve staff satisfaction

This process was not without its challenges, changing deeply rooted cultural practices is expected to be initially met with resistance and dissatisfaction and in this example this issue was exacerbated by the healthcare climate at the time, namely the latest Covid-19 surge of Omicron variant. This was addressed by articulating to staff that because of these issues, it is more important than ever to provide more efficient joined up services.

The Calderdale Framework is consistent with a variety of established change management literature, with the added benefit that the framework provides realistic and pragmatic instruction on the implementation and facilitation of the process, which in this case is directly attributed to the successes achieved in this project.
